In July of 2016, “Geneva Believer” was born.
Over the next five-plus years, I immersed myself the work of researching and reporting on the social and political happenings in my little hometown city of Geneva, NY. Geneva Believer grew from a local alternative news blog to an influential source of investigative news and views about the social and political happenings in our community.
Today, I’m announcing that I’ve made the difficult decision to cease publication of Geneva Believer, effective immediately.
One reason this decision has been so difficult is because I truly and deeply love the Geneva community. That love inspired me to dedicate myself to the work of Geneva Believer. That love compelled me to spend hundreds of hours and countless evenings and weekends researching, writing, and editing more than two hundred articles. Everyone in Geneva deserves the truth, and I’ve done my best to give Geneva the truth.
The decision was made even more tough due to the fact that over the last half-decade, the community has been able to count on Geneva Believer to tell the truth. For those who seek justice but aren’t being heard, Geneva Believer has been there. The fact that Geneva Believer will no longer be there for the community is the hardest part of stepping away.
So, why am I stepping away?
I’ve always aimed to give Geneva the unvarnished truth, no matter how uncomfortable, and now I need to be just as truthful with myself. The truth is that I no longer experience the same excitement, satisfaction and joy in writing for Geneva Believer. The truth is that the inherent stress of writing about city politics has negatively impacted my health. The truth is that I owe it to my family to be healthy and present. And as much as it saddens me to end it, I can’t allow Geneva Believer to stand between me and my family, and my own well-being.
My heart is filled with gratitude for everyone who has come along on this wonderful, transformative adventure over the last five years. My job was to tell a story of what’s happening in the community. The community’s job was to hear that story and create positive change, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for doing that job so lovingly and expertly. I have often said that if it weren’t for my readers, I would just be one more guy yelling into the abyss of the internet about local politics, and I’ve always been humbled and grateful for the support I’ve received from every one of you, even if you didn’t always like what I’d written.
Massive thanks also go out to all the unnamed and uncredited contributors who worked in the “Geneva Believer newsroom.” These mystery staffers provided tips, inside information, leaked documents, and more, sometimes at great personal and professional risk, in order to bring Geneva the truth. Even though mine was the only name on the blog, I never felt like I was doing it alone, and I can’t thank you all enough. The community is enormously fortunate to have such truthtellers among us.
Finally, I want to thank my family and friends for their love and support. Without all of you, there’s no Geneva Believer.
See you around, Geneva!
Thanks for reading,
